Know Moncton: OMG Market

Get ready to rethink one-stop shopping! For years, Moncton-North has been enjoying both McBun’s and the Old Fashion Meat Market. The two stores are stocked with fresh products and friendly staff. Nothing beats McBun’s delicious peanut butter oat cakes (SO good!!!)

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 3.42.04 PM BUT it’s way more convenient to head to a one-stop shopping location where some fresh veggies are available alongside baked goods and protein!

In comes the OMG Market. Last summer Shane realized the need for a shop specializing in produce on the North end of Moncton and the location between the meat market and McBun’s seemed like a great opportunity! People in the neighbourhood (or people like me who have to drive across town!) can stop at the Valhalla Plaza and pick up their entire grocery list from local shops!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 3.26.09 PM

Shane choose the name “OMG market” after his stepmom Carolyn suggested it. Initially, the name didn’t click, but the more Shane thought about, the more sense it made. He used to work in the Moncton Industrial park and there were many days that he would have to stop at the grocery store to pick up a few items on the way home. He would drive by the Trinity Superstore and forget to stop. Once he realized, he would think, “Oh My Goodness,” I forgot to stop and get the bread, or whatever; and he’d have to turn around and fight the traffic to get back there.

The OMG market does their best to bring in as many local products as possible. They focus on fruits and vegetables and have a variety of organic products.

In addition to produce they also carry honey from Allison, NB (near Salisbury); maple products from Elgin; apples, apple cider, jams, and jellies from Memramcook; cheese, tea, and spices from Sussex; Covered Bridge Chips from the Saint John River Valley; Coffee from Saint John; olive oils & balsamic vinegars from Europe via a St. Andrew’s distributor; hot sauce from Cardigan, PEI; and culinary wines from Shediac! They also prepare fresh salads every day at the market!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 3.31.33 PM

Over the next five years, Shane would like to see, as a minimum, two other locations open! He plans to start in either Riverview or Dieppe and possibly continue throughout the province! These shops, like the Mountain Road location, will offer a unique blend of local products in a small, cozy atmosphere, with a strong focus on customer service! OMG staff focuses on making sure every customer is welcomed and that all questions are answered before they leave!

A few fun facts about Shane!

Q. Do you travel? Where have you been?

R. My wife and I have been travelling to the Dominican Republic every year for the last few years. We certainly enjoy our time down there.

Q. If you could choose one vegetable or fruit that does not grow in NB to grow here, what would it be?

R. Bananas for sure. They are a favourite of mine.

Q.What is your favourite vacation spot in the Maritimes?

R. My favourite vacation spot in the Maritimes has to be PEI.

Check out the OMG market (and lots of other shops) at 1855 Mountain Rd! Let us know what you think!

Colour Palette of the Month: May

May 2013 Colour Palette

It’s May! This month is a big smorgasbord of Mother’s Day (May 12th),  Victoria Day Weekend, Cinco de Mayo, and National Smile Month (UK)! We’re starting to feel the sun on our backs and get an extra spring in our step! Road construction crews and spring clean up are in  full swing. I know our street has started piling up large trash items on the curb, so this month’s palette is inspired by  “upcycling” outdated items! As I was browsing the web for images to add to my ideabook, I kept ouuing and awwing at all the amazing “upcycling” in design. This basically means giving outdated household items a new purpose or new coat of paint. Over the past year or so, many designers have been glamming up outdated or “vintage” items to accent modern decor. This colour palette mixes aged tones, rustic wood, and bold shades of rust to create a chic, eclectic look!

May Bedrooms

This curb-side inspired palette adapts to  a wide range of style preferences. A great option is to paint your walls neutral hues and accent your room with the wood and rust! The first bedroom plays on a variety of red and orange to add some character to an otherwise grey room. In the second photo, the bed stands out with its gorgeous deep orange comforter. The neutral backdrop adds some depth and interest to the space. The chandeliers in both examples are upcycled! The first is from the Victorian period and the second is a modern spin on candlelit  fixtures.

Kitchen

I’ve always been a huge fan of bold colours in the kitchen, but these warm hues really bring out the wood tones! Both designers used a variety of wood grains with one standout, statement piece. The red base to the island transforms an otherwise “normal” kitchen into a cool, eclectic space. In the second photo, a simple coat of bold orange paint cranks this dining room’s design appeal up a few notches!

Screen shot 2013-05-02 at 10.46.00 AM

Again, the bold rust shades really bring out the beautiful wood grains in the flooring, while the neutral walls and large windows keep the rooms elegant and modern. I definitely saw that fun area rug in the first photo at Ritchie’s in Moncton last summer!

Smaller Space May

Lastly, this colour palette does amazing things for small spaces. The beiges or greys create an airy feel, while the colour pop give the illusion of a larger space! A coloured office chair, vase, or a solid stripe all make a small space seem less cramped! The grey vintage wall paper makes for a particularly unique design!

Have any of you been browsing the spring clean up curbs for items to upcycle?

The Greater Moncton Home Show Recap

I bet most of you–at least those of you from Moncton–were distracted by these little signs plastered around the city.

These signs, and a few billboards, were directing you all to the largest home show in Atlantic Canada! If for some crazy, unexplainable reason you couldn’t make it, here’s a recap of our favorite show! You know those model kitchens and bathrooms at Kent or Home Depot? Imagine that scene at the coliseum and you’ve got the Greater Moncton Home Show! Last weekend, many of you strolled through the doors of the annual show to chat with anyone and everyone in the housing industry!

home show

With the help of our friends at DS&Co., our booth got a major overhaul from last year! It felt like a good ol’ maritime kitchen party as we spent the day chatting with friends-new and old-in our cozy, modern flat!

Picture 6

We also partnered with the Boys&Girls Club to offer you all a coat check and chance to win your dream cottage! Its not too late to buy a ticket! Click here for the dets!

Picture 8

I had the chance to sit in on this seminar and learn some practical tips about building your home with the future in mind. While spiral staircases rock, it may be a bit is way more practical to think about installing a staircase that is compatible with a lift. I definitely wouldn’t have thought of that right of the bat!

Picture 12

We really enjoyed chatting with all the guests, but it was awesome to catch up with some of our partners and friends like the people at Atlantic Home Warranty and artist Matt Leblanc!

Picture 11

There were SO many smiling faces around the coliseum! Bergman Landscaping & Masonry even set up a backyard camp out!  Also, how cool is that hide-a-bed! Who needs a pull-out couch when pull-down bookcases are an option?

Picture 9

Maritime Door & Window and Efficiency NB were right around the corner from us, so we were able to check out all the latest innovations for keeping your house eco-friendly and stylish!

Picture 10

The show was nothing short of chic with many companies showcasing modern lighting, flooring, and countertops! I’ve always had a thing for black countertops, but I think Precision Countertops won my heart with their stone-patterned display model! It seemed so fairy-tale meets HGTV.

If you didn’t make it this year, we hope to see you next year! BUT, if you did make it, what was the highlight for you?

Sea Kelp A.K.A. The best thing ever.

Sea Kelp? Yes, that slimy long, tangly stuff that you try to avoid the entire time you’re looking for a place to lay in the sand. Somehow, the guys at Nova Scotia Fisherman® ( http://www.novascotiafisherman.com/) have turned these slippery strands into a line of unbeatable products.

My roommate and I were grocery shopping at the Sobey’s on Elmwood Dr. in Moncton when we found these products on an end-cap by all the vitamins/ organic food. We were both reeled in by the East Coast logo and once we opened up the samples, we were pretty sure we had landed on a beach. There’s not really any other way to describe the scent of these products other than Hawaiian Tropic suncreen in the bay of Fundy.

I bought “Rescue Balm” and my roommate Melissa bought the lip balm, but I’m pretty sure we’ll have all 4 products next time we get groceries.

The “Rescue Balm” literally has nothing “Chemical-like” in it. The ingredients are olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, nova scotia sea kelp, castor oil, rosehip oil, aloe, vitamin E, lavender, tea tree oil, rosemary, geranium, and chamomile oil. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, so I’m generally terrified to put anything new on, but since there was nothing unnatural in this, I put it on my face (yes, my face!!) before bed. I woke up with unbelievable smoother skin and no new breakouts!

The lip balm is probably the best marketed cosmetic I’ve seen. The attention to detail is awesome! The packaging reminded me of a Push Pop, but without the gooey sugar running through the bottom!  If you look at the sample, you might be alarmed by it’s brown colour, but don’t worry! You’re lips stay pink, but turn super moisturized and smell like heaven!

Needless to say, I am hooked on Nova Scotia Fishermans line of gender-neutral products!
Are any of you?

Know Moncton: Clementine

If you can’t make it to Europe and happen to be in Moncton, add a stop at Clementine Café to your to-do list!

This chic café–named after owner Clement Dugas– is located at 62 Elmwood Drive in the Sunny Brae community. With many corporate coffee shops opening in the city (which we all love), Clementine offers a refreshing take on classic café items. The menu is loaded with fresh, local food and beverages ranging  from Chockpish Salad and Paninis to Cranberry-Pear Smoothies and Americanos. They do their best to shop as local and real as possible. While their speciality is espresso drinks, they (debatably) have the best coffee in town. They serve varying roasts of fresh ground, Just Us coffee (check Just Us out on our favourite things list!).

Clementine Café was originally located on St. George street, but due to issues with the building they were forced to leave. The café closed for six months and Clement was beginning to feel that he would not be able to reopen. He and his wife had moved to the Sunny Brae community and saw the potential for community development. When 62 Elmwood Dr. became available, they took a leap of faith and reopened. We’re definitely glad they did!

Fun Facts about Clement:

Q. If you could open a coffee shop in any city in the world, where would it be?

 A. One time my wife and I were on vacation in Orleans, France. It’s a small city, about 100,000 and I remember thinking it’d be a great place to open a coffee shop.

Q. Do you travel often?

A. I’ve traveled Europe a few times. My wife is from the countryside in France, near Switzerland. It’s a small community, not like Paris or anything. So we always have a home-base there. Once we transformed a work van into a camper and traveled through Europe. We always went to public pools to clean up. It was cool because we were able to see a lot of locals.

Q. What inspired your decor?

A. We wanted to keep the same look we had at St. George, like with the wood panelling, but a lot of the inspiration comes from my travels.

Where We’re Building In 2013

By: Natalie

One of the most frequent questions that I get asked through our Contact Us page is whether we build in a particular geographic area. While we are working very hard to take over the World (Mouhahahaha), we are currently expanding at a good rate and keeping operations focused in New Brunswick for 2013.

So, where do we build?  Check out our list of MHB locations:

1.  Greater Moncton

Moncton, World Headquarters for Martell Home Builders, is where we set roots and first established ourselves.  We build in all of the Greater Moncton Area including Dieppe and Riverview.  Because Moncton is our most established location, we’ve been able to diversify into Lease-2-Buy properties and reselling through our sister company Martell Realty. Moncton Fun Fact: In 2008, Readers’ Digest dubbed Moncton “Canada’s most polite & honest city.”

2.  Miramichi

2012 marked our third building season in Miramichi.  We really enjoy working with the local trades & people in the Miramichi area and providing them with the Martell Experience.  Miramichi Fun Fact: In 2010, Miramichi was named the world’s first Smart Technologies Showcase Community for use of Smartboards in schools & businesses.

3.  Saint John

Saint John is a market that we’ve been working for three seasons as well.  We’ve been active building custom homes in the Greater Saint John Area and we love working with our awesome team of established local trades.  Saint John Fun Fact: Saint John boasts the largest public transit system in the Province.

4. Sussex

Just a skip down the highway,  the picturesque community of Sussex is growing.  Increasingly popular with the retiree crowd, we think that Sussex is the perfect market for our bungalow semi-detached homes which offer one-story living at a value price point.  Sussex Fun Fact: Sussex is the “Mural Capital Of Atlantic Canada”.

5. Fredericton

2013 will mark our expansion into the Fredericton market and we couldn’t be more excited! Fredericton is a such a great city with an active lifestyle.  In fact, we are actually hiring a new Location Manager for this market place.  Check out the job positing here.  Fredericton Fun Fact: The notorious Benedict Arnold once lived in Fredericton.
