CIBC Run For Cure: 2012 WrapUp

Martell Hope Builders had another awesome experience at CIBC’s Run For The Cure on Sunday, Sept 30th. It was a bit rainy, but spirits were bright! Centennial Park was the place to be in Moncton, as our community enthusiastically showed their support. This annual event raises awareness (and funds) for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. While kilts and uniforms were spotted, pink definitely dominated the fashion scene!

All in all, our team raised $2856.00 for the Cure. Check out some pics from the day below:

Tips on How to Run Better

Here at Martell Homes we are getting ready for the CIBC Run for the Cure happening on September 30th! And we want you! That’s right, we want you on our team as we run to end breast cancer.

Now, you may be saying “Yeahhh but I don’t run!”.. and that’s okay for 2 reasons!. 1) You don’t have to run when you’re doing the Run for the Cure, you can walk! and 2) We’re here to give you some tips so that you can!

Here are our top 5 tips on how to run better:

1. Be the Turtle When Training – While we all get a little excited when we start something new it’s really important when running to  start conservatively and allow yourself to progress. The danger is that if you start too aggressively you can set yourself up for some less than desireble injuries. Try adding 10% to your run every week for the first three weeks and then back off a bit (20%) for the following week.

2. Treat Your Feet – Having the proper footwear is essential. We’ve all done it, we’ve gone to the store and bought new runners without actually getting them to properly size and evaluate our feet needs. Take your time when you go to get your runners and make sure that you have the absolute best fit and shoe to help you avoid running injuries.

3. Bring a Friend: There’s nothing like having someone there beside you to keep you motivated, entertained, and engaged. Bring someone along who you know will support you and encourage you in your goal. Having someone also makes you more likely to keep up your running schedule because you’re less likely to make excuses not to run if you know someone is depending on you.

4. Keep Your Gear Ready – Always have your running gear (clothes, shoes, water, watch) ready in a bag so that any time you have a burst of energy or motivation you can take advantage of it without getting slowed down by prep.

5.  Enter Races – Races give you a goal which will make you more focused and motivated to push yourself to be the best you can be. The CIBC Run for the Cure is the perfect opportunity for you to set a goal and work towards it. Fuzzy Pink Mustaches, Cars, and Breast Cancer

Did You know that one in 9 (11%) of Canadian women are expected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime?

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs.

That is why we at Martell Homes put giant (and admittedly ugly) fuzzy pink mustaches on our cars every year. We do it to raise awareness and support for the fight to end breast cancer. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation does more than just cancer research; they also help pay for treatment, offer education and after care support, fit women with wigs and prosthesis, and more. This organization saves lives and Martell Home Builders support them 100%.

From now until race time on September 30th, our trucks will be driving around Moncton with a big pink moustache on them to celebrate and raise awareness for all those who are fighting. If you see us (and the mustaches) be sure to stop us and say hi, or share your story.

Sausage Fest (literally) Fundraiser

This Wednesday we held another fundraiser for our CIBC Run for the Cure team! Our great friends at Kent sponsored a delicious BBQ for our trades workers and we took the opportunity to sell some sweet treats to the men as well. We raised $133for our Run for the Cure team which is fantastic and we can’t wait for our next chance to raise even more. Check out the pictures below and then go here to donate to our team!

We Don’t Just Build Homes, We Build Hope

Breast cancer is a deadly disease that affects millions of people (men and women) every year. Last year Canadians raised over 30 million dollars toward breast cancer research through the CIBC Run for the Cure. Here at Martell we are proud to have been a part of that and are even more excited about 2012. This year we kicked off our 2012 fundraising campaign with our Wine and Cheese party… and that was just the beginning.

Now is the time for you to get involved in this great cause! We are searching for people to join are team to help make breast cancer history. There are two ways that you can help:

1. Join our team! – The run will be happening on Sunday September the 30th at Centennial park and we’re looking for able bodies to come on out participate. It doesn’t matter whether you run, walk, or crawl to the finish line it’s about getting out and supporting this important cause. If you’re interested in joining our team drop us  a note in the comment box or go right onto the CIBC Run for the Cure website (here) and sign up!

2. Donate – If you are unable to participate on “race day” but still want to be involved, your financial support is more than welcome. To donate online, go here or just keep your eyes and ears open for our next fundraising event.

We are truly so honored to be doing our part to eradicate  breast cancer and we hope that you will join us as we go beyond just building homes and continue to build hope.

Wine, Cheese, Friends, and Fundraising

The CIBC Run for the Cure is a special project that Martell has also been proud to support. On the past Friday MHB held a tweetup wine and cheese party to raise fundraise for our run for the cure team! The party was held in one of our ecohomes and what fun it was! Here are some pictures of our night:

Why Run For The Cure? Meet My Friends…

Post By: Natalie Davison

Who in your life has been affected?

I started doing the CIBC Run For The Cure in 2009 shortly after one of my dearest friends, began her fight with breast cancer.  If you haven’t watched someone you love battle this disease, you are very fortunate.  Sharing her experience was nothing short of life changing for me.  Battling radiation and chemotherapy for months upon months, my friend set a goal- to complete the Run For The Cure for the first time.

That year, I pushed my one year old twins in a stroller while my friend was pushed alongside them in a wheelchair- riding out the effects of a particularly difficult round of chemotherapy.  I’m moved to tears just remembering that day.  She was pushed across the finish line just before her 84 year old grandmother walked across.  She was surrounded by an army of supporters, family, friends and total strangers who understood her battle.  Imagine the love that she felt that day! THAT is what this run is all about.

Recently, I’ve been touched indirectly by this disease again.  When I had my twins, I became part of an extremely supportive online forum of mothers of multiples.  These ladies have coached each other through childbirth, nursing, managing the day to day and even devastating loss.  My heart broke when I recently learned that one of these amazing young mommies is facing this fight.  She is the new face of this disease- young, beautiful, vibrant, mom of 3 young kids.

You should read her story here: http://cancerfnsucks.blogspot.com/.

We do this Run because we want to help.  We want fighters and survivors to be surrounded by an army of friends, family and fans.  We need them to know that they’re not alone- that they’ll never walk alone.

Join us on October 2!  Or if you can’t, consider supporting us with a sponsorship or by attending our Wine & Cheese For The Cure.

“The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs. It was created by a small group of volunteers who wanted to raise awareness and funds for the cause. The first event took place in Toronto in 1992 where over 1,500 participants raised $85,000.

Last year, support of the Run for the Cure grew stronger, with record-breaking dollars raised and unwavering corporate and volunteer support. In 60 communities, more than 170,000 supporters united as runners, walkers, donors, volunteers and partners, to raise $33 million. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is extremely grateful for this support and is honoured to be entrusted by the nation to continue to lead the way in creating a future without breast cancer.

Run or walk 5k or 1k at this year’s Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 2nd.” (www.runforthecure.com)
